How Long Does an Airbnb Damage Claim Take?

April 20265 min read

The timeline for an Airbnb damage claim depends on where you are in the process and how the guest responds. There is no single answer that applies to every case, but the major stages each have their own timeframe.

Filing the Initial Request

You can file a damage request at any point within 14 days of checkout, or before the next guest checks in — whichever comes first. The filing itself is immediate. You go to the Resolution Center, select the reservation, and submit your request with a description, photos, and the amount you are requesting. This step takes as long as it takes you to prepare your documentation.

The Guest Response Window

Once you send the request to the guest, they have 72 hours to respond. They can agree to pay, decline, or make a counter-offer. If they agree and pay, the matter is resolved and funds typically reach your account within a few business days.

If the Guest Does Not Respond or Declines

If the guest does not respond within 72 hours, or if they decline to pay, you can escalate to Airbnb using the Resolution Center. At this point Airbnb becomes involved in reviewing the claim.

For straightforward cases with clear documentation — timestamped before-and-after photos, itemized damage descriptions, and receipts or repair quotes — decisions often come within 5 to 10 business days. More complex cases, or cases where the guest disputes the claim with their own evidence, can take longer.

Payment After Approval

Once Airbnb approves a payment, processing typically takes 3 to 10 business days to reach your account depending on your payment method and bank. Airbnb states in its Host Damage Protection Terms that it will use commercially reasonable efforts to complete processing within three months of receiving all required supporting documents. Three months represents the outer limit of the stated policy, not the typical case.

If You File an Appeal

If Airbnb denies your claim and you appeal, the timeline extends. Appeals require Airbnb to conduct a second review with any new evidence you submit. There is no published timeline for appeals. Responding quickly to any follow-up requests from Airbnb and submitting complete documentation at the start of the appeal gives you the best chance of a timely resolution.

What Slows a Claim Down

The most common reasons a claim takes longer than expected are incomplete documentation at the time of filing, a guest who formally disputes the claim and provides conflicting evidence, or a case that involves a large amount or complex circumstances. Filing early in the 14-day window, submitting clear photos and documentation the first time, and responding promptly to any Airbnb follow-up requests all reduce the time a claim takes to resolve.

A Realistic Summary

If the guest agrees to pay, the process can resolve within a few days of checkout. If Airbnb gets involved with clear evidence, expect 1 to 3 weeks from the point of escalation to payment. If the case is complex or disputed, it can take longer, and Airbnb's stated outer limit is three months from receipt of all documents.

HostClaim helps hosts organize photos, damage descriptions, and amounts before submitting to Airbnb. A complete submission from the start is the most reliable way to keep the process moving.
